“Travel the Path to Achieve Excellence”
May 2010 We Are the Church
Dear Saint Charles School Families, Easter blessings and peace be with all of you! As you can see, the fourth quarter is once again full of activity and excitement. The month begins with the much anticipated, at least on the part of the students, return of the summer uniform. Please be sure to review the Family Handbook for the details of the uniform. Thank you in advance for your continued cooperation with the dress code. Students must still change into their phys. ed. uniforms on gym days. There are some notable dates for May and June. May 4 is National Teacher Day. A nice note for your child’s teacher would be a kind gesture that costs nothing and means more than you can imagine. May Crowning is an annual prayer service in which the second grade first communicants wear their first communion outfits and two eighth graders crown Mary as our Queen. All parents are invited. Our fourth quarter Casual for a Cause Day donations will benefit the Parma Animal Shelter. In support of our favorite Cleveland sports teams, students may wear CAVS or Indians attire. Students must wear a short sleeve t-shirt under a sleeveless jersey. Thanks to our student council for choosing our charities this year. The prayer crosses, sold every other week by student council, have raised over $120 for Camp Cheerful. We continue to pray for the intentions written on the crosses. The PTU sponsors the ever-popular Family Bingo Night – two tuition drawings will take place for next year. The PTU Rummage Sale takes place on May 22 with the proceeds benefiting the Saint Charles Drama Club. If you were able to make it to one of the excellent performances of A Christmas Carol in April, you will agree that the Drama Club is a well-deserving recipient. The Music Association is having a donut sale fundraiser after Masses on May 16th – please consider making a purchase for your family. Some interesting and lively student events: Student Council/Teacher Volleyball game on May 21, “Got Prayer” Group’s final prayer service on May 24, Talent Show on May 28, and the Awards Ceremony on June 1. We invite all families to each of these happenings.
Our never-ending love of reading is celebrated during Right to Read Week. There will be a separate information sheet coming home detailing the observance of this week. The Cuyahoga County Library, one of the best library systems in the country, will be visiting our students to talk about their summer reading program. Thanks to Ms. Megan Leigh, Mrs. Maureen Leigh’s daughter, for giving so much of her time this year in our new and wonderful library.
We honor the terrific artwork created during the school year with a Spring Art Show on Sunday, May 23. Please take some time after Mass to view the showcased talent of our students. Bring grandparents and other family and friends to see the show. Thanks to Mrs. Schaeffer for bringing out the great talent in all our students. Thanks to Ms. Bednarski, Mrs. Lang, Mrs. Prevost, and Mrs. Bowne for assisting Mrs. Schaeffer each week during the school year.
As Mrs. Sutton mentioned in her PTU newsletter last week, if you missed the last PTU meeting, you missed a lot. The traffic plan for next school year was revealed, explained and there was an opportunity to make suggestions. I am so grateful to the parents who were able to take the time to join us. Everyone is expected to follow this plan. It will come home on May 14. Families are to review the plan and sign the agreement sheet. All families must agree to the plan. The agreement sheets are due May 21. All classes who have 100% of the agreements returned by May 21 will earn an extra recess. Those who do not return the agreement will receive a phone call reminder, but their child’s class will not earn the recess. It is a matter of safety and it is to be taken seriously. We are appreciative to the Parma Safety forces who have worked closely with Saint Charles School to develop the plan and who will provide a crossing guard on Wilber Ave.
There are a few other due dates to remember. Last week, the order forms for Summer Solutions books were sent home. Orders and money are due May 7. On May 7, we are sending home information regarding summer tutoring opportunities as well as registration for “Get in Shape for School.” The registrations are due May 21, same date as the traffic plan agreement. Also on May 7, students in grade 1, 3, 5 and 7 will be taking home their scores from the IOWA Tests of Basic Skills and Cognitive Abilities Tests. Please review the scores with your child. If you have any questions, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher. May 14 is the last day to purchase a 10-day lunch pass for the cafeteria. We are doing our best to keep all due dates on Fridays. Keep the calendar handy!
Some congratulations are in order. First, we just received word that Saint Charles School, once again, is the top selling school for the Diocesan Universe Bulletin Subscription Drive. Students from Saint Charles sold 49 subscriptions, with our own Will Maier being the top selling student in the diocese with 16 subscriptions. We are also proud of Maggie Sutton and Anna Mika for donating their hair to Locks of Love. Their service to others is admirable. The following students are winners in the Saint Charles 2010 Severe Weather Awareness Poster Contest: Grade 6: 1st place, Kacey Hudak, 2nd place, Megan Jones, 3rd place, Hannah Welsh; Grade 5: 1st place, Danielle Rosales, 2nd place, Kaitlyn Martuch, 3rd place, Andrew Musik; Grade 4: 1st place, Catelyn Cook, 2nd place, Garrett Priestly, 3rdplace, Brian Bowne; Grade 3: 1st place, Shane Kelly, 2nd place, Matthew Zassick, 3rd place, MariaDavila. Great job everyone. We are also encouraged by the number of new students to our musicprogram. Twenty one students are new to the program while the following students are ready to join the band: Avery Jester, Alyssa Rukavina, Anna Baker, Alexis Keltner, Diego Morales, Kassie Schill,Ashlynn Uzl, Rachel Bokros, and Reilly Daniels. Their hard work and dedication have led them to anew point in their musical career. Join our current band for their concert on May 19 at 7:00 Pm in our own Saint Charles gym. Congratulations to all!
With the final report card, students will also bring home the Opening of the 2010-2011 School Year Packet, which will include the school supply list. We will also post as much pertinent information on the website and edline for your reference. This year’s Giant Eagle Apples for the Students pointsallowed us to get some useful technology that will benefit the whole school. As you save your Campbell’s labels, be sure to return the whole label, including the UPC code. Without the code, the label does not count. This year, we have collected close to 18,000 labels, with a bonus of 2000thanks to Mrs. Klonowski in the office. Keep collecting box tops and Tyson labels over the summer. Remember to recycle in the Abitibi bins.
Finally, we are delighted to share in the joy of the 2010 Saint Charles graduates! Some of these young men and women have been a part of the school family since they were three years old while others have only been here for two years. They are a unique class of wonderful and caring individuals who will always be remembered. On June 2, they will be the 86th graduating class of Saint Charles and ready to move on to a new chapter in their lives. We pray for them and wish them great success in the future. Of course, our hope is that they are able to be a part of the Saint Charles High School Youth Group so that they stay connected to their “home.”
God bless each family and stay safe this summer. We will pray with you at Mass during the summer. We will have fun together at the Carnival in July. Be sure to register for Summer Bible Fun for July26-30. Keep your faith alive and we will be together once again in August!
Peace –
