Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic School:
Shaping Saints and Scholars
Welcome, Mrs. Muro!
By JP Hatgas
Mrs. Muro is our new fifth grade homeroom teacher, and fifth and sixth grade social studies teacher. Of course, we all know her and her class as the ancient Mesopotamia rappers who performed at our annual talent show! Mrs. Muro has two children, Kayla and David, who both attend Baldwin Wallace University in Berea. Her favorite sports team is the Cavs and her favorite player is Jarret Allen.
Before coming to Saint Charles, Mrs. Muro taught at the Academy of Saint Bartholomew in Middleburg Heights and Holy Family in Parma. Mrs Muro's favorite food is cheese pizza –and yes, she knows that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza! Mrs. Muro loves to go to Cedar Point. Her favorite ride is Steel Vengeance. Two of Mrs. Muro's favorite books are Tuck Everlasting and Wonder. She loves teaching at Saint Charles, and she said that “it already feels like home”. Mrs. Muro believes that social studies is fun, and incorporating music into lessons is a great way to learn. Look for Mrs. Muro at next year's talent show!

Classroom of Champions
By Michelle Salem
The Classroom of Champions is a fast paced quiz game held at Saint Edward High School once a month. Can you identify the name of a Beethoven symphony just by looking at the sheet music of just the first four notes? The Saint Charles team can! How well do you know the Periodic Table of the Elements? Our team knows it from Actinium to Zirconium! Who wrote the musical Hamilton? Well, everyone knows that!
Similar to Academic Challenge or Jeopardy, the competition matches junior high students from all over the Cleveland area against each other. A question is read aloud to all the players, and each team has about ten seconds to enter their answer on an iPad. There are twenty-five questions in the first round, ten questions in the second round, and two wild card questions in the last round. Up to eighteen schools compete at once, answering a variety of questions on a given topic. So far,the topics have been United States History, Science, United States Literature and Fine Arts. Our team has done very well, finishing first in Science, second in US Literature, and fourth in Fine Arts- against 17 other teams! The next event will be held on February 8, and the topic will be European History. Did you know that the Hundred Years War between France and England actually lasted at least 116 years? Joan of Arc, the patron saint of France, led a French army into battle during that war when she was only 19 years old!
This year we have nine team members: eighth graders Thomas Gordan, Victoria Johns, Chloe Mouzaya, Owen Farrell, and Jacob Taylor, along with seventh graders Arianna Gambrel, Chloe Egnaczyk, Isabella Dinya and Irena Gordan. Up to five team members can compete at an event,so the team changes from month to month, allowing everyone a chance to play. They all meet a few times before theeach game to practice and discuss strategies.. The team is moderated by our teachers Mrs. Mazur, Mrs. Cremona, and Mr. McKay.
Please wish them all good luck for the rest of the competitions!
Welcome, Mrs. Novak!
By John Paul Hatgas
Mrs. Novak is our new second grade teacher. She became a teacher because she wanted to help kids grow, be a good role model, help the future and to form relationships with kids, parents and colleagues.
Mrs.Novak loves staying active. She likes watching the Browns and being a cheerleader for her kids in the stands at their wrestling matches and volleyball meets. Mrs Novak used to play volleyball and softball at Corpus Christi in Old Brooklyn. Mrs.Novak then attended Saint Joseph Academy and Ursuline College.
Her first job was at Mr. Hero when she was 14. Mrs.Novak’s favorite food is donuts, her favorite movies are the Harry Potter series, and her favorite show is The Big Bang Theory. Mrs. Novak’s favorite place is in the Dominican Republic--at the beach, of course! If you see Mrs. Novak in the hallway please say hi!

Weekend Trip to Washington, DC
with the Eight Graders
By Michelle Salem
The 8th graders went on their Washington, DC trip from November 5 until November 7. They visited the Washington Monument, the Capitol, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, The National Holocaust Museum, and the Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania. They went to Mass on Sunday morning at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and Jacob Taylor and Grant Mahle actually got to serve. In just three days they visited at least eight historical places!
Wait, there’s more! They also visited the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament, where knights joust on horses! Did I mention they went on a river cruise and had a huge dinner and dance party? It was an amazing weekend learning and having fun in Washington, DC. Even the bus ride was fun. They listened to music, told jokes, and watched movies. They really learned a lot about our nation on the trip. Congratulations to the eighth graders!

Be the Reason!
by Michelle Salem
Our theme this year is “Be the Reason”. What does that mean? Being the reason means being good to friends, family, and teachers, but it also means being good to yourself. Here's something to think about before reading the rest of this… Do you work hard and try your best? Are you able to put yourself into someone else’s shoes, and try to feel what they feel? Do you believe that everyone you know and care for is also trying their very best?
Okay, now that you thought about that, we can continue!
Being faithful, honest, caring, and loving in faith is to be the reason.
Be the reason for your friends and family, so they know how much you love them. Being the reason isn't difficult–just think about how you can live a life full of kindness and compassion for others. So how about we start off this school year right and Be the Reason!
